Some Contributions of the Department of Veterans Affairs to the Epidemiology of Multiple Sclerosis

John F. Kurtzke, MD, FACP, FAAN

Dr. John F. Kurtzke is a well-known and beloved figure in the CMSC and, of course, the man behind the scale which bears his name. His invited review appears in Multiple Sclerosis (Multiple Sclerosis 2008;14:1007-1012).  In it he revisits the study of World War II and Korean Conflict veterans and the visionary treatment trial which has contributed significantly to current progress.  In this review Dr. Kurtzke champions the contributions of others to knowledge about MS and expresses gratitude to peers and participants.  As we continue the effort to change the face of MS, our admiration acknowledges this landmark work and Dr. Kurtzke’s contribution by providing the original article for your interest.
